PTE Essay- Age discrimination occurs when a decision is made on the basis of a person’s age. In the workplace, these are most often decisions about being employed in the first place, winning promotions or being unfairly dismissed. Should discrimination against older workers be made illegal?

Undeniably, laws are there to protect fundamental rights of citizens. As far as the question of discriminating against senior or older workers is concerned, i don’t feel such behaviour can be regulated by law. Let us dig deeper to analyze various aspects of the topic.
To begin with, employers are the sole custodians of their business. For the progress of their business, they need to take some tough decisions. In this regard, it becomes imperative for them to employ the right person for the right job. This is the basic tenet of any business. If the law of the land regulates employment, it would be considered as an uncalled for interference. To quote an example, for front office jobs in airlines and other industries, young and presentable executives are desirable. Old people may not be the best-fit for such positions. Similarly, other vocations such as those of army and air-force, call for a certain level of physical strength. Candidates beyond a certain age, might not come with that strength, and hence can-not be employed for such positions. It would be prudent for law to leave such decisions to the employers only.
Well, the purpose is not to say that discrimination based on age is healthy. Law should definitely address such issues where employers show personal bias towards employees based on age or gender. However, law making authorities should be prudent enough to understand the demands of the job. For example, even for government jobs there are set benchmarks for age and physical fitness. Only those aspirants, who fulfill the criteria, are given an opportunity to appear in the test.
To conclude, I do not endorse the view that discrimination based on age should be declared unlawful.
